Empires of the both worlds - 1780 (Alt. History) by ZalringDA Empires of the both worlds - 1780 (Alt. History) by ZalringDA
Once again this map could be seen as a sequel of my map describing the kingdom of Lothier where Charles the Bold, of the house of Valois-Burgundy, managed to make a kingdom of his territories. But this time the kingdom will be successively united to Aragon, France and Scotland instead of England.

Other points of divergence allows this situation : Ferdinand II of Aragon never get married with Isabella of Castille. But his daughter and heir will marry the son of Charles the Bold : Philip. The latter will surprisingly inherit the kingdom of France from his rival, the king Francis I, killed in Italy. This tragic event will lead to a remarkable reversal of the situation...

The new Emperor, Frederick of Habsburg, worried about the possibility of having such a powerful neighbour (France + Lothier + Aragon) at his borders (and even inside because of the Lothier !) will turn against his Valois-Burgundy uncle (Frederick's mother is the half-sister of Philip, Philip and Frederick have roughly the same age) and vassal and claim the Lothier for himself, trying to turn England and Italian states against him and supporting the bastard branch of the house Trastamere for the kingdom of Aragon.

The Wars for the 4 kingdoms (because the claims are about the Lothier, Aragon, Naples and later England), against a backdrop of religious wars, will last for 60 years, involving the Valois-Burgundy, the Holy Roman Empire, all Italian states, England, Scotland, and lead to redefine Europe's borders :
- In Italy, the Valois-Burgundy finally renounce their rights on the kingdom of Naples, but expand in Piedmont and Genoa.
- The Lothier become fully independent from the HRE. However the Northern Netherlands are lost and become the "Imperial Lothier".
- The Auld Alliance between France and Scotland become a dynastic one when Jean, the son of Philip, marry Mary, queen of Scotland (not the Mary Stuart of our timeline). England will be claimed by him for his wife, but will never be durably conquered, mainly because of the religious differences.
- Even if the attempts of the Habsburg for reducing the Valois-Burgundy are mostly unsuccessful, these wars, along with the religious troubles, are the opportunity for them to increase their stranglehold on the HRE and to impose the Reform to the whole Empire after their conversion in 1540. Their last ally in Italy, the house of Savoy (ruling the Savoy and Milan) will convert too.
- At the age of 57, Philip of Valois-Burgundy become Emperor : his possessions are erected into an Empire by the pope in 1542. The birth of the Francian Empire (later the "Francian Empire of the Five Kingdoms" with Scotland, Aragon is already ruled by himself) became possible because of the desire of Philip to unify his possessions and the will of the pope who wanted to have a Catholic empire facing the Reformed one.

These wars, very destructive, were the last of their kind for centuries in Western Europe : after them the rivalry between the great powers will mostly exert in the New World and against the Ottoman influence.

Now you may ask : But what is this f****** language you used to make your map ?
If you're a French speaker, it should looks weird but easily understandable and pronounceable ^^.

Early in his reign, the king Philip of Valois-Burgundy - who failed to learn Latin - is concerned by two opposite aspirations : being respectful of the customs of his possessions, and create an unified and indivisible kingdom. This huge task begins by the installation of an unique language for the unified administation. In order to achieve this, he created the The Royal High School, composed by lettered people of all kingdoms, whose the first mission was to normalize a language based on French and make it understandable everywhere he rules.

Of course it took decades before the "Francian" gains ground in the administation and even centuries to be spoken by the man in the street. Moreover, this artificial and imperfect language was deeply modified since its creation. It became the common tongue for everyone in the Empire only with the birth of the school for all, in the XIXth century. However, because it's easy to learn (the grammar is very simplified in comparison with French, amongst other things), it became the language of the diplomacy and trade much more earlier.

Thank you :D. So maybe you'll like my highly germanised version of the Norman language for the next map. But after this one, I will make a pause in making new languages for my maps because it's a hard work... tu sais de quoi je parle ^^.

Excellent work! How's Poland doing here? There's been no partitions but Russia may have sliced off some bits in the east where we can't see...

Thank you ! It's exactly what it happened : Russia taked some parts around the Dnieper and in the North to get an access to the sea (Kalmar Union was too strong so Russia never took Ingria). However in this world Ottomans are still strong and Prussia has been absorbed by the Habsburg who want to have a buffer state between the Empire and Russia and an ally against the Ottomans. That's why Poland was never partitioned.

The work on this is beautiful, the worldbuilding is fascinating, but the language is what gets me most of all. It's gorgeous - just familiar but still distinct and new. Great job all around!

Thank you ! I was a bit dubious about my language, so you reassure me ^^. I was afraid that the introduced modifications could be too much considering the time (and that's why I precise that this map is a map of 1900 describing the XVIIIth century, so using a recent attempt to normalize this common tongue).

Republic of Poland and Lithuania and then Lithuania is a Duchy and Poland a Kingdom?

Anyways, this map is stunning, such a great work!

The old Commonwealth was officially titled the Rzeczpospolita, which is roughly "Republic".

Ah ah, you may think it's weird, but this is not alternative history ^^
Have you never heard about the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth ?

Yeah I heard about it. The case is that a Republic is "The form of government which has no monarch" and there are monarchical divisions within the country.

You may be right in our modern acceptation of this term. But the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth ("République des Deux-Nations" in French, on which my language is based) was truly made from the kingdom of Poland and the grand duchy of Lithuania and had a king at its head.

However it was an elective monarchy where the nobility had a great power... That's why this regime is often described as an "aristocratic republic".
